THE
STORY OF A SOUL
St.
Thérèse of Lisieux
|
|
Editor: Robert J. Edmonson, CJ
Millions have been touched by St. Thérèse’s
desire to be a humble, “little flower” that would
be a delight to God’s “eyes.”
Her autobiography was first published in 1897 after her death
at the age of twenty-four. Combining charming descriptions
of her family with accounts of her foibles, her sense of humor,
radical honesty, and intense devotion to God made the book
an instant bestseller. This Paraclete Heritage Edition includes
every word of the original text.
“[Jesus] wanted to create great saints who could be
compared to lilies and roses. But He also created little ones,
and these ought to be content to be daisies or violets destined
to gladden God’s eyes when He glances down at His feet.
Perfection consists in doing His will, in being what He wants
us to be. . . .”
The most popular saint of the first half of the 20th century,
St. Therese of Lisieux was declared a Doctor of the Church
in 1997 by Pope John Paul II. |

SAINT THÉRÈSE OF LISIEUX
Doctor of the Universal Church
Steven Payne, OCD
On World Mission Sunday, October 19, 1997, Pope John Paul II declared
St. Thérèse of Lisieux a "Doctor of the Universal
Church." This event marked not only the culmination of an unprecedented
series of honors bestowed on "the greatest saint of modern
times," as St. Pius X called her, but it also represented a
watershed in the evolution of the understanding of this ecclesiastical
title bestowed on only 33 saints in the history of the Church.
Certainly, at the time of her death in 1897, no one would have guessed
that this 24-year-old Carmelite nun, with such a limited education
and imperfect literary style, who never wrote a treatise or published
an article and who died virtually unknown in an obscure French Carmel,
would one day come to be ranked alongside such eminent personalities
as St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, as a doctor ecclesiae.
Her selection did not come about in a vacuum, nor did it happen
easily.

EVERYTHING IS GRACE
The Life and Way of Thérèse of
Lisieux
Joseph F. Schmidt, FSC
Thérèse of Lisieux has been called the greatest saint
of modern times, but some view her spirituality as sentimental and
syrupy. Joseph F. Schmidt, FSC, dispels that notion by contending
that Thérèse’s “little way” is really
the gospel message—a message that can best be understood in
the context of her life.
Schmidt does a masterful job of weaving together biographical details
with Thérèse’s profound insights on God’s
love and mercy. This book is a must-read for anyone who wants an introduction
to Thérèse’s spirituality as well as for those
who desire a deeper appreciation of her “little way”—a
way that continues to speak to Catholics today.
Includes photographs of Thérèse as a young girl and
throughout her life. |

SAINT FOR THE
THIRD MILLENNIUM
ST. THÉRÈSE OF LISIEUX
Rev. Charles P. Connor
"Through spiritual childhood one experiences that everything
comes from God, returns to Him, and abides in Him, for the salvation
of all, in a mystery of merciful love. Such is the doctrinal message
taught and lived by Saint Thérèse of Lisieux."
After having thus turned the spotlight on the spiritual message
of the Little Flower, Pope John Paul II solemnly declared her a
Doctor of the Church at a Youth Day Rally in Paris, France, on Mission
Sunday, October 19, 1997. Probably one of the best known and certainly
one of the best loved of all the Saints in the Roman Calendar, questions
still remain regarding the mystery of her impact on the modern world.
Who was she? What exactly was her message? How did she embody the
doctrine that she taught? What does she have to say to us that would
make us call her: The Saint for the Third Millennium? In his well-researched,
inimitable and highly readable style, Father Connor sheds new insights
into the life and message of this great saint who has much to say
to us today.

THE HDDEN FACE
A Study of St. Thérèse of Lisieux
Ida Friederike Görres
This study of the life and character of Therese of Lisieux is a remarkable,
penetrating, and fascinating search for the truth behind one of the
most astounding religious figures of modern times. A young nun who
entered a convent at fifteen and died at twenty-four, Thérèse
roused an incredible storm of spontaneous veneration only a few months
after her death, and has been called by one Pope as “the greatest
saint of the modern times.” Countless images of the sweetly
smiling saint flooded the world. But who was she, really?
The Hidden Face has sprung from this question. It presents the true
Therese, as objectively as possible, and gives a convincing interpretation
of her sainthood. It is a book not for Catholics alone, but for anyone
fascinated by the force of spirituality, by the incalculable effects
of what Pascal called the “greatness of the human soul.”
It opens the cloistered world of the Carmel, takes off the sugar coating,
and reveals the stark drama behind convent walls, the tension between
personalities, the daily details of conventual life. And it throws
light on the tremendous purifying process that turned the pampered
darling into a saint of heroic virtue. |
