TRUE SELF FALSE SELF
Richard Rohr, O.F.M.
Franciscan priest Richard Rohr, feels that there is no more
challenging spiritual issue than the problem of the self."
Most of contemporary spiritual teaching, he believes, is still
trying to inspire and fortify the private self, the autonomous
"I."
Even much church work is trying to evangelize and sacramentalize
what many would call "the false self." Basic transformation
is not expected, but merely a new set of beliefs and practices
or loyal membership in a new group. This only confirms the
disguise of the ego, but does not truly offer a "new
creation." Both the individual and society remain largely
unchanged.
Rohr suggests that until the false assumptions of Western
individualism are clearly faced and experienced by religious
believers (and they are the only ones fully prepared to face
it), there will be no real breakthroughs for Christianity
or any religion. He makes reference to the work of Ken Wilbur,
Thomas Merton, Eckhart Tolle, the mystical tradition especially
of Julian of Norwich, and the new paradigms offered by quantum
physics. In a presentation that embraces the challenge, inspiration,
and the genuine hope that is offered by the Gospel of Jesus,
Richard illustrates the implications of transformation both
for individuals and for society at large.

RICHARD
ROHR ON CHURCH
Collected Talks: Volume
Three
Richard Rohr
Four of Richard Rohr's classics on the life of the Church,
available
on CD!
Talk One Catholicism: More Than a Head Trip
(74 minutes) Richard Rohr fears that many Catholics are not
getting a healthy, integrated and holistic teaching but simply
a head trip.
Many are missing the richness of our tradition. He addresses
the current struggles of a Catholicism that Robert Barron
says, "is in some ways bland, abstract and culturally
accommodating."
Talk Two Authentic Religion:
Membership or Transformation? (60 minutes) Sometimes our search
for God is confused with belonging to a select group and following
the rules. Richard Rohr warns us that belonging to a community
and "doing it right" is not always enough to open
the door to God. Jesus talked about it as a narrow road. An
attitude of unbounded gratefulness toward all of life reflects
whether transformation is real and religion authentic.*
Talk Three Faith: Recovering the
Language of Belief (70 minutes) Faith is not easily
achieved or understood, says Richard Rohr. In our push-button
world, people struggle with the concept of mystery. Many are
walking out of a Church they have never known. To some, it
appears we have also lost the language of faith. Rohr encourages
us to hold the hands of our ancestors and of the next generation
believing Christ is risen in all things.
Talk Four Gravity and Grace:
Insights Into Christian Ministry (63 minutes) Christian
life is the best preparation for Christian ministry, says
Rohr. All we can give is who we are. Ministers are the gloves
that God wears to touch us. He invites us to touch others
on the edge of our society, according to our unique life and
gifts. |

REBUILD
THE CHURCH
Richard Rohr
Western civilization is undergoing a crisis of meaning. Christian
community needs to find new value, identity and purpose through
hope, says Franciscan Father Richard Rohr. In lectures and
homilies at a year-end retreat, he describes both crisis and
cure. In the 13th century, he tells us, St. Francis was called
by the Lord to "rebuild my Church." Anguished by
the fragmentation in the Church today, Rohr invites us to
rebuild the Church in the 21st century.
He offers remedies to grow beyond our false worldview and
narrow individualism that have destroyed our values and traditions.
Rohr proposes a Reconstruction Creed that focuses on God's
movement in history.

”Blessed
be God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed
us with all the spiritual blessings of heaven in Christ.
Thus he chose us in Christ before the world was made to be holy
and faultless before him in love, marking us out for himself
beforehand, to be adopted sons, through Jesus Christ. Such was
his purpose and good pleasure, to the praise of the glory of
his grace, his free gift to us in the Beloved, in whom, through
his blood, we gain our freedom, the forgiveness of our sins.
Such is the richness of the grace which he has showered on us
in all wisdom and insight. Ephesians 1:3-8 |
